The Nineteenth Century
1857 --October 10, 1857---the Norwegian Synod decided to establish an institution of higher learning with a Norwegian background in America, but first used Concordia Seminary in St. Louis (Missori Synod) having a professorship there until there was enough money to start a college. The church council that made this decision met at Washington Prairie church. (Luther College 1861-1961, p. 33)
1859 --Laur Larsen started his position as professor at Concordia Seminary on October 14, 1859. This is now recognized as Founder’s Day. (Luther College 1861-1961, p. 38-39)
1861 --September Luther opens in Halfway Creek, Wis. (LC61-61, p. 49) Beginning of the American Civil War. (more...)

Luther College
Located in the small northeast Iowa town of Decorah, Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution of about 2,500 students. The college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther offers more than 60 majors and preprofessional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. Its mission statement emphasizes faith, leadership, and community service. Luther College provides equal opportunity for all qualified persons in its educational programs and activities.

College Chips - The majority of the Luther College Chips, the college newspaper that began in 1885, are now digitized. Enter the database to search and view the collection.
Flickr - Luther College Archives has quite a collection of photos digitally uploaded onto the photo sharing site called Flickr. Search for "Luther College Photos" then click the "People" tab above the search bar to see our albums.
Archon - Archon is the new online searchable database of the Luther College Archive's collections. Currently, approximately 90% of Luther College Archives' materials are findable in through Archon. As the Archon project continues to grow, all Luther College Archives materials will be searchable, along with the archival materials from Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum.
